Dorothy Chakra – 2014-2015. University of Southampton MA Scholar.
Dorothy’s research proposal for her MA Thesis:
Eight modern wrecks have been noted in the vicinity of the Lebanese coastline; however, most of these have not been scientifically recorded. As they are part of the Lebanese International Underwater Cultural Heritage there is an urgency to study and conserve these wrecks that are in constant threat. I intend to undertake extensive surveys of these modern wrecks, by primarily assessing the available textual and historical data and by collecting oral histories. This research will be the first scientific inventory of its kind, implementing safeguarding measures to protect the wrecks, in collaboration with the Direction Générale des Antiquités (DGA). It will also be a case study reflecting on the role and implementation of the UNESCO 2001 Convention.
