Jafar Anbar – 2020 – University of Aix-Marseille PhD Scholar

Currently, I am in the second year of my PhD research at the University of Aix-Marseille. The PhD is a joint degree between the National University of Athens and Aix-Marseille University at the framework of CIVIS. My doctoral research proposes the systematic archaeological documentation of the southern part of the Syrian coastline from Arwad Island to Tabbat Al-Hammam. For more information on the fieldwork at Amrit click here.

The first year of the research focused on four main topics:
1- Bibliographic research focusing on the Syrian coastline concerning historical and geographical research, harbour engineering research and geoarchaeological research
2- Setting up the GIS database of the study zone.
3- I was able to undertake a fieldwork project: Topographic and photogrammetric documentation of Arwad island, Syria 2021. This fieldwork was generously supported by HFF.
4- Treatment and analysis of the collected data from the recent fieldwork.

Now I am a member of the steering committee of MAGS (Maritime Archaeology Graduate Symposium) since I and two of my colleagues are organizing the conference MAGS 2021 this year to be held virtually in Aix-Marseille University supported by Honor Frost Foundation.

Finally, I am still participating at Aix-Marseille University team at the European Horizon 2020: NEANIAS 2019-2022: Novel EOSC (European Open Science Cloud) Services for Emerging Atmosphere, Underwater & Space Challenge https://www.neanias.eu/.
