Launch of the Cyprus Coastal Assessment Project (CCAP)
The Department of Antiquities, Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works, announces that the research programme entitled “Cyprus Coastal Assessment Project (CCAP)” with funding from the Honor Frost Foundation has begun on 2 September 2019. The aim of the project is the mapping and documentation of the underwater and coastal archaeological sites of Cyprus. The first phase of the programme involves data gathering from the archives of the Department of Antiquities, various other governmental departments and public institutes, as well as the relevant archaeological literature. It also includes the analysis and evaluation of satellite imagery, topographical and bathymetrical data, and spatial patterns of archaeological sites as well as interviews with the coastal communities. The project’s database is developed based on the data gathered and will be connected to a geographical information system (GIS) platform as a framework for gathering, managing and analysing the data related to the maritime archaeological sites of Cyprus and its cultural heritage.
