NAS Online Course: Anchor Recording using the Big Anchor Project online database

On the 27th June 2020 the Foundation funded ten students and researchers from the HFF region to attend the NAS online course on anchor recording. This is the first of a number of online courses that the Foundation is providing support for in light of the current situation with covid-19. The pandemic has meant that many workshops, courses and conferences have been postponed, such online courses have enabled students and researchers to continue to learn, share ideas and network with others in the field of maritime archaeology.

The course provided an introduction to anchor development, looked at different types of anchors and their components, introduced recording methodologies, photography and how to use the Big Anchor Project online database. The course also provided the opportunity for participants to discuss the topic and exchange ideas, ending with a practical session on using the online database. Participation in the course will allow students and researchers in the HFF region to better identify, understand and record anchors, as well as looking at what they can tell us about the wider context of maritime archaeology in the region and further afield.

“The bursary was a great and fruitful opportunity to participate and exchange views with others” (Aya Omar Esmail)
