Mohanad Jawhar- American University of Beirut (Minor)- 2024
I completed my bachelor’s degree in arts and archaeology at the Lebanese University, where I developed a foundational understanding of the Bronze and Iron Age.
Then I refined my skills while working as a research assistant, during which I recognized the important role of maritime archaeology as a unique source of data for strengthening my insights into archaeology within the historical and geomorphological contexts.
I was lucky to be accepted into the Minor in Marine Sciences and Culture by the HFF and AUB, which provided me with an opportunity to engage in a high-quality academic experience. This program introduced me to a multidisciplinary subject, including geomorphology, meteorology, harbor technologies, and ship engineering. These studies have enriched my perspective on maritime archaeology and its role in understanding societies.
I perceive the field of archaeology and maritime archaeology in particular as a field where a holistic approach has its space, especially in the technological aspects in which I’m interested, precisely in the development of archaeological surveys, data collection, and analyses. I plan to enhance my technical understanding of these processes during the spring semester and potentially develop my own methodologies.
This opportunity was valuable in supporting my academic journey, enabling me to engage with new methodologies and deepen my understanding of the maritime heritage of the Near East.
My current research focuses on harbor development, coastal transformations, and human modifications of marine landscapes. I aim to enhance my expertise in archaeological surveys and data collection, contributing to the advancement of methodologies in maritime archaeology.
