The marble routes: Isola delle Correnti Roman shipwreck Project - 2015

Dr Carlo Beltrame

In May 2015, the Isola delle Correnti site was investigated. The wreck, discovered by a fisherman and investigated in 1958 by G. Kapitaen, was the subject of a significant campaign that resulted in the identification of the type of marble as mostly proconnesian and the downsizing of the tonnage estimated in 1958 for the stealing of some blocks over the years.

The site was investigated as part of the ‘Marble Routes Project’ which aims to reconstruct the dynamics of the marble trade and the characteristics of the ships used to carry these special cargos in the Roman period.
