After the first successful organisation of MAGS in February of 2018, we are pleased to announce MAGS 2019 at the University of Southampton from March 29-31. The organisation of the symposium will be a collaboration between PhD candidates from the Centre for Maritime Archaeology (CMA) at the University of Southampton and the Oxford Centre for Maritime Archaeology (OCMA).
This year’s symposium targets post-graduate and early career researchers based in different institutions (e.g. University of Cyprus, University of Oxford, University of Southampton, University of Aix-en-Provence, Centre of Maritime Archaeology and Underwater Culture, Alexandria etc.) whose work involves maritime archaeology in the eastern Mediterranean. The primary aim is to give the opportunity to young scholars to discuss and analyse research issues related to the field of maritime archaeology in the eastern Mediterranean. Furthermore, it aims to identify scholars working in this field and establish a community of academics in the hope of fostering engagement and promoting inter-institutional networking, connections and research collaborations.
The proposed symposium will take place over three days. The first day will be dedicated to registration, introduction and a wine reception. The second day will be dedicated to research related to maritime archaeology in the eastern Mediterranean. The following day will be open for general discussions of methodological advances and legislative issues in maritime archaeology.
We hope to build off the successful event in 2018 and continue to grow the initiative into an elaborate framework involving a substantial community of researchers in the coming years.
