Located off Sidon, major city of ancient Phoenicia, the island of Zire has been used as an outer secondary harbour and a quarry ever since Antiquity; it shelters a roadstead that still serves today as a fore-port.
In 1966-1967, Honor Frost undertook the first underwater study of the site which revealed submerged ancient remains, notably a jetty and a large amount of architectural elements, on the island’s east coast.
As part of a doctoral research at the University of Poitiers – France, the present project aims, by resuming Honor Frost’s investigation, to produce a comprehensive and detailed digital underwater archaeological map of Zire island site.
The HFF Grant will allow for the project’s initial phase, consisting in the systematic prospection and inventory of the site in 2013. The objective of this preliminary field work is to provide information about the exact nature, location and extent of all remains lying in Zire waters. This work will be preparatory for future topographic and photogrammetric survey operations.
